NORMAN JAMES TOBIAS September 2, 1924 - November 9, 2014 Norman James Tobias, age 90, a long time Park Rapids, MN area resident, passed into eternal life on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the Care Age Country Home east of Park Rapids. Norman was born on September 2, 1924 in Wyndmere, North Dakota to Alexander and Mary Tobias. As a teenage boy he traveled with his family to the Park Rapids, MN area where he grew into manhood. As a young man he entered the United States Army Air Corps where he proudly served his country during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Norman worked in the building trades throughout most of his life. His life was made complete in his marriage to Betty Jean Lohner on September 21, 1945 in Park Rapids. This union was blessed with two sons: Andrew and Larry. Norman was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Each spring he looked forward to planting a large garden which he would nurture into fruitful abundance to share with family and friends. He and Betty enjoyed making all types of wines from local berries and produce from Norman's garden; including, his popular beet wine. He enjoyed working with his hands in his garage wood shop where he made many gifts of birdhouses, kitchen cabinets and other furniture items. His life was deeply saddened by the death of his precious wife, Betty Jeane on December 6, 1999 and the death of his oldest son, Andy in 2004. Norman was a long time member of the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post #212 and the 40 et. 8 Veterans Organization both of Park Rapids. He is survived by one son, Larry (Sandra) Tobias of Hugo; three dearly loved grandchildren: Brandon, Joshua and Breanna Tobias; 4 great grandchildren; his sister, Erma Johnson of CA as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, son, Andy; four brothers: Alvin, Bernard, Earl and Irvin and five sisters: Gladys, Bernice, Vera, Arlene and Carol. Funeral services were held 11 AM Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with the Reverend Arthur Wood officiating. Special musical tributes will be: "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art" and "When I get Where I Am Going". Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery of Park Rapids next to his wife, Betty Jeane. The Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post #212 will provide military honors.
